Hay, Veggies & Treats Explained

Hosted by Winnie ๐Ÿพ

Hay should make up the vast majority of a rabbit's diet โ€” roughly 80% or more โ€” and should be available at all times, not just at mealtimes. It's essential for digestive health and for wearing down a rabbit's continuously growing teeth.

Timothy hay is the standard staple for adult rabbits, while younger, growing rabbits often do well with alfalfa hay, which is richer in calories and calcium. Fresh leafy greens (like romaine, cilantro, and herbs) should be offered daily in modest portions, introduced one at a time to watch for digestive sensitivity.

A small measured portion of rabbit pellets rounds out the diet, but shouldn't replace hay as the primary food source. Treats like small pieces of fruit or carrot should be occasional, not daily, since rabbits are prone to weight gain and digestive upset from sugar-heavy diets โ€” think of them as an occasional bonus, not a diet staple.
