Hosted by Sprout 🐾Young, growing leopard geckos shed frequently — sometimes as often as every one to two weeks — since they're outgrowing their skin quickly. Adult geckos shed much less often, typically once every four to eight weeks, though this varies by individual and health.
Before a shed, you might notice their skin looking dull or slightly grey, and their appetite may drop for a day or two. A humid hide (a small enclosed space lined with damp moss or paper towel) is essential during shedding season — it helps the old skin loosen and come away cleanly rather than sticking, which can cause problems, especially around the toes and tail tip.
Leopard geckos also eat their own shed skin in the wild, which is completely normal and provides some nutrients. If you notice retained skin, especially around the toes, after a couple of days, a vet or experienced keeper can advise on safely helping it along.
